Chapter Nine

Josh groaned as he woke up. He felt like the Bad Oak tour bus had backed up over his spine and parked there for a week. What the fuck? He rolled over, wincing as he tried to remember what the hell happened. “Gerwulf?” He reached out blindly, but his hand hit rug instead of soft pillows.

“I’m here.” Gerwulf coughed, then grabbed Josh’s arm from above. “What happened?”

“I have no fucking idea.” Josh sat up, then hauled himself back onto the mattress. “I fell out of the bed.” He twisted from the waist, wincing when the movement cracked vertebrae in the middle of his back. “Something attacked us.” He pulled Gerwulf into a hug, staring over his lover’s shoulders at the far end of the room. Through the windows, a pink haze dusted the dark sky along the edge of the city. He guessed it was maybe forty minutes before dawn broke. “Are you okay? We both blacked out for hours.”

“I think so.” Gerwulf kissed his shoulder then rolled away and sat up. He flicked on the bedside light, swaying as he sat.

“You look like shit, Gerwulf.”

“Gee, thanks,” his mate replied tiredly, rubbing his face.

“I didn’t mean it like that. You’re worried.” Josh put a hand on Gerwulf’s back. “I can sense it. And you don’t feel well. This is a hell of a way to react to bonding. I don’t remember my brother mentioning this.” Truthfully, he didn’t feel great, either. He sensed the bond, but he also sensed a sort of darkness twisted into it. Was that normal? Probably not. I hope not. He shivered, shying away from the sticky miasma in his mental space.

“What else can you sense?” Gerwulf rolled back down onto the bed, as if he was too tired to sit upright. Dark had swallowed the bright gold of his eyes.

Josh didn’t want to describe what he felt, but he knew he had to. “Our bond. It’s silver, but there’s something else there, too. Something dark.”

“That’s weird.” Gerwulf frowned.

Josh concentrated, following the other threads in his mind. “The pack is in turmoil.” He could feel his brother Ryan’s exhaustion and confusion. Bardulf’s energy signature lay right next to Ryan’s. “My brother and Bardulf are upset.” He gripped Gerwulf’s hand. “How in the hell am I able to sense this? Is this part of the mating thing?”

Gerwulf shook his head. “No.” He pursed his lips. “Well, sort of. The moment we mated, you became a full member of the Forst Pack. Your status immediately registered among the pack’s bonds. You’re the Beta.”

Josh frowned. “I thought Zev was the Beta?”

“He was only filling in until the true Beta, the Alphas’ second, stepped up.” Gerwulf shrugged. “I guess you had to become a full member for it to work. Ralf told me Zev had recently retired.”

“Wait. Back it up a bit. I’m second in command of the largest North American werewolf pack? Just like that? Boom. Instant responsibility.” Josh snapped his fingers. He had a rough idea of what the Beta’s duties were, but he’d never expected to be the one who had to fulfill them.
